National moderation
We work hard to ensure our values are truly reflected in what we do on a day-to-day basis. One the biggest projects we have had this year has been the review of our moderation system. This project reflected all three values in a very real way. We have a responsibility (kaitiakitanga) to uphold the quality of our unit standards so ensuring our moderation system is effective is essential. We also needed to guarantee the system was what the industry needed (manaakitanga). So, we asked them. We brought many groups together (kotahitanga) to develop the new system. This process has been effective in developing a process that will take effect in October 2009.
In October, all registered assessers and all teriary education organisation who assess our unit standards will meet together under one roof. The two-day event includes learning and sharing of expertise and knowledge as well as assessment moderation. The aim of the event is to shift the focus of moderation on a unit standard basis to a moderation system that recognises quality assessement and can address issues before they become problems. This event replaces the regional moderation meetings of the past. Here is a story about how we went about establishing our new moderation system.
