    Skills for the Future of Social Wellbeing – workforce development project for social services

    Whānau ora, family-centred and community-building approaches are the focus of workforce planning for social services towards 2020.

    The workforce development project “Skills for the Future of Social Wellbeing 2020” is in its early stages, with a discussion paper due for distribution in April.

  • 21/10/09 - Family start study awards

    The Family Start study awards were established to allow Family Start employees to study part-time towards qualifications in social work, health or early childhood education. The awards are administered by Family and Community Services.

    Fifty study awards are available each year for a four-year period from 2006 – 2009. All providers are notified once the process is underway.

    The current application round is being held for applicants who can begin their study in 2009.

  • 21/10/09 - Financial support to employ youth

    Job Ops is a new Government initiative which provides employers with a $5,000 subsidy to provide employment opportunities to young people with low or no skills or work experience.

    Job Ops opportunities must be for at least six months, and are targeted to help prepare young people for further opportunities in the workforce.

  • 04/10/09 - NGO Social Work Study Awards - 2010 Application Round

    The NGO Social Work Study Awards are aimed at building the capability of people working in community-based social services. Up to 85 awards are offered every year to assist employees of non-government organisations to undertake part time study for a degree level qualification in social work to enable them to get registered.

  • 07/09/09 - Social Services ITO launches service to recognise inhouse training programmes

    The Social Services ITO is launching a new service to recognise the inhouse training programmes offered by social service agencies.

    ITO Chief Executive, Dr Rory Truell, said the service was a way to harness the untapped potential of inhouse training to help staff and volunteers gain national qualifications.

  • 09/07/09 - Draft degree unit standards up for consultation

    The draft degree unit standards for social work and youth work have been developed by unit standard working groups consisting of representatives from peak industry bodies, tertiary education organisations (TEOs) and community organisations. The unit standards will shortly be put before a reference group for feedback.

  • ITO and technical institute join forces to develop two new degrees

    09/07/09 - ITO and technical institute join forces to develop two new degrees

    An industry training organisation and an institute of technology have joined forces to develop two new national degrees – one for social work and the other for youth work.

    The agreement, signed this month by the Social Services ITO-Te Kaiāwhina Ahumahi, and Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec), addresses the longstanding need for degree level qualifications for the social services workforce.
